Pine Bark Beetle Infestation...

The Pine Bark Beetle is a tiny beetle or insect that is known for infesting and killing off Pine trees. They are attracted to trees that are suffering from stress due to drought, flooding, neglect, etc. The Pine Bark Beetle can be compared to a grain of rice in length and likes to bore tiny holes through the bark and into the vascular layers of the Pine tree. These vascular layers allow the flow of essential nutrients from the root system to the leaves of the tree, much like the veins and arteries in a human. Although they are tiny, the Pine Bark Beetle attacks the Pine tree in more significant numbers so that the number of boreholes can reach up to the hundreds and even into the thousands. Finally, the vascular layer of the tree is disturbed to the point that vital nutrients are no longer able to make their way to the trees leaves, and the tree dies. This whole process can take at the very least, 14 days from the time the Pine Bark Beetle enters the tree. By the time you can notice the Pine Bark Beetle infestation, it may have already been ten days or more.

Get Rid Of Pine Bark Beetles in Houston...

To get rid of Pine Beetles, Houston TX Tree Service uses a small plug known as an ArborPlug. The ArborPlug is directly inserted into a drill hole around the base of the tree. A specialized needle is then inserted into the Arborplug, and the formula is injected deep into the vascular system of the tree. The formula is then sent throughout the trunk, branches, and canopy. The ArborPlug maintains the injected components inside the tree, protects the drill hole, and remains inside the tree without inflicting any adverse effects. The tree begins to fight off the Pine Bark Beetle infestation from the inside-out! This form of Pine Bark Beetle treatment is top of the line!

Pine Bark Beetles will most likely attack the surrounding pine trees after they are finished with the original tree. It is important to talk with your Arborist about preforming this procedure on the trees that are close by to decrease the chance of a bark beetle infestation spreading to the rest of your yard and/or your community.

What Methods DO NOT Work?

Spraying the Trees: Spraying a tree is only effective for pests that are exposed to the sprayed insecticide. Pine Bark Beetles are embedded beneath the bark of the tree, so pesticides that are sprayed will not come in contact with Pine Bark Beetles. Spraying insecticides can reach and exterminate desirable insects nearby such as butterflies, honey bees, ladybugs, and others. Spraying insecticides is not legal near waterways and is poisonous to native fish. It can also be very messy and could wash off during periods of rain.

Signs of Pine Bark Beetle Infestation

We recommend homeowners take every preventative measure by identifying the signs of Pine Bark Beetle infestation and recognize bark beetle activity.
There are some precautionary measures that you may take to help recognize the beetle activity, and we want to share them with you!
  • Treat your trees before they show any symptoms and avoid an infestation all together!
  • The peak season for beetle activity is from March to October. Keep in mind that they can remain active for winter.
  • Keep a close eye out for browning needles or needles, turning a rusty shade of red.
  • When a tree becomes stressed, it will produce a higher amount of Pinecones. This is a symptom that you must not overlook!
  • If a fine granular or fuzzy like sawdust appears at the base of your tree, you must call us immediately!
  • Watch for pitch tubes to appear. They resemble small crawfish mounds protruding from the trunk of your tree. Once pitch tubes are apparent, it may be too late to save your tree at this point, but we can help with what may be a hazardous removal.
